One person was killed in Akwa Ibom on Sunday during the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said to be violent in most parts of the state.
The deceased identified as Ukeme Efanga was said to have been shot dead in Ifiayong, Uruan local government area of the state, during a disagreement over the distribution of election materials in the area.
Our correspondent gathered that as at 8: 10 p.m. yesterday, the victim’s corpse was dumped at the premises of the state secretariat of the APC, along Ikot Ekpene Road, after it was brought all the way from Uruan.
It was also observed that two persons, a man and a woman, said to be the victim’s relatives, sat on the floor near the corpse, crying helplessly, while a few APC members from Uruan stood near by, staring at the corpse.
Apart from Kufreabasi Etuk, an APC aspirant for Senate race in the state, no senior party member was seen around the area.
“It is a very unfortunate thing,” Mr Etuk said of the killing.
“He was a very loyal and committed member of the party since the days of the Action Congress (ACN).
“He has never gotten anything from the party. And yet they killed him just like that. Who will now take care of his three children?
“I am waiting here to make sure the corpse is taken to the mortuary,” he said.
Mr Etuk said election did not take place in whole of Uruan local government area where he comes from.
Meanwhile, the APC, in press release, regretted the killing of Efanga saying that the party does not encourage or condone violence in all its activities.
Nkereuwem Enyongekere, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, who confirmed the incident, late on Sunday said:
“We sincerely regret this loss of life. Our hearts and prayers are with the family of our departed colleague. As at this hour, we do not have the full and substantiated reports of what happened.
“But we wish to invite the Police to urgently step into the matter, investigate it, arrest the killer and bring him to justice. We shall offer the authorities full cooperation in getting to the end of this matter.
“As a Party, we do not encourage or condone violence in all our activities”.
Unconfirmed reports say three other persons were also murdered elsewhere during the exercise.
No statement has been given by the police following the killing.
Odiko MacDon, the state Police Public Relations Officer, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
