The Nigeria Labour Congress in Akwa Ibom State has asked the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, to harmonise pension.
Chairman of the union, Mr. Etim Ukpong, who said this in his address during the May Day celebration in Uyo on Tuesday, asked the state government to include teachers and local government workers for payment of gratuities upon resumption.
Ukpong, however, praised the state government for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and retirees’ pensions.
“It is always on a day like this that children recall the good things that parents have done for them.
“In our state, as workers, we want to appreciate the governor for the prompt payment of salaries, prompt and regular payment of pensions, promotions as already announced by the head of civil service and for the actualisation of other financial obligations of promotions.
“It is also in a day like this that children exercise the hope of what their father has in store for them. His Excellency, your children, the workers, want to hear me present their grievances to you and they will be very happy when you make pronouncements on these prevailing issues.”
Emmanuel said he was happy with the NLC and TUC for acknowledging that his government had been able to meet almost 80 per cent of the requests they presented.
The governor, noting that his administration was up-to-date in the payment of pension arrears, said efforts were being made to clear outstanding gratuities.
He said, “Let me also say that I have put mechanism in place; so, we are already working on affordable housing for workers. I have enjoyed a very cordial work and harmonious relationship with the labour movement in this state. I must thank all of you for making that possible.”
