How Maritime Academy Rector, Effedua, lied on record of institution’s staff strength

Following the recent claim by Commodore Duja Emmanuel Effedua, Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron, that he met a staff strength 716 and 86 staff employed by the Academy in 2016, facts have emerged that the Rector misled the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Maritime safety, Education and Administration with lies.

It can be recalled that on Friday when the House of Representatives Committee led by Honorable Mohammed Umaru Bago visited the Academy, the Rector, according to report in Tribune Newspaper of March 16, 2018 by one Tola Adenubi, had explained that “when I took over as Rector, I was handed a staff strength of 714 workers which I was not okay with”.

However, documents made available to journalists by a Senior staff of the Academy who did not want his name on print, show that the immediate past Rector, Mr. Mkpandiok Ante Mkpandiok allegedly handed over 696 pensionable staff to the Commodore Duja Emmanuel Effedua on assumption of office as against the Rector’s 714 acclaimed staff strength.

On the illegal employment of 83 people in 2016 by the Academy as claimed by the Rector, available documents also show that there was no single staff of the Academy employed in 2016 as only 46 staff instead of Effudua’s 83 were employed in the Academy in 2015 by the late Rector, Dr. Joshua Okpo.

Information gathered also showed that staff employed were initially sixty (60) staff but only 46 accepted the appointment because of distances from their state of origin.

Further checks revealed that the list of those employed for IPPIS Director had about eight (8) Yoruba names instead of Northerners including names of wives of Yoruba staff already working in the Academy as manipulated by the former Bursar, Mr. Folorunsho Kayode.

However, a letter by the Federal Character Commission dated 17th September, 2015 with Reference Number FCC/099/S.9/91/111/174 and signed by Director, Monitoring and Enforcement D. O. Fakeye for Acting Executive Chairman of the Commission,  indicated that the 2015 recruitment process was authorized and approved by the commission against what Effedua claimed.

A letter also sighted by this reporter from Federal Ministry of Transport, Human Resources Management Department signed by the Director, Lawal Ibrahim, shows the employment process was approved against the blatant lies peddled by the Rector.

It can also be recalled that on 12th March, 2018, Council of Oro Traditional Rulers had sent a letter titled “A case of suspended staff members of MAN, Oron” signed by HH Offong Etim Oquong, HRH Offong Effiong M. Umanaowo, the council urged the Rector and the Chairman Governing Council, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron to recall the suspended Registrar Mr. Mkpandiok Ante as other senior management staff suspended same time with Mr. Mkapndiok Ante were already called to resume.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that as soon as the current Rector resumed duty, he had ordered for the immediate suspension of the Mr. Mkpandiok without reason.

Many believe Duja Effedua may be on a mission to victimize and chase out the Oron people from the academy community  as allegedly authorized by his Principal, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the Federal Minister of Transport.
