Governor Udom Emmanuel has emerged the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Akwa Ibom State gubernatorial election that is scheduled for March next year.
Governor Emmanuel has had an outstanding first term in office in which he has actualized his industrialization agenda wherein he brought into existence the toothpick, pencil, syringe, electric metres, flour mill, plastic and coconut factories as well as Peacock Paint, fertilizer firms and many kilometres of roads.
He was returned unopposed after party delegates across the 31 local government areas of the state, in a historic primary in which no other aspirant indicated interest in challenging him, elected the governor as sole candidate.
At the well-attended state congress that took place at the Uyo Township stadium, on Sunday, Governor Emmanuel polled a total of 3,807 votes out the 3,817 votes to take the part ticket, leaving 13 votes out of which 10 were voided votes.
Declaring Emmanuel the duly elected winner of the primary and party candidate for next year’s election, the Chairman of the congress committee and outgoing Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, explained that the total number of accredited delegates in the election were 3,830.
He said the governor satisfied all the requirements of the law and was therefore returned elected as the flag bearer of the party in the 2019 general elections.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Udom Emmanuel declared that PDP had demonstrated the capacity for leadership and that he has remained faithful to the promises he made when he took over the mantle of leadership in 2015.
He said: “Let me thank all of you for this show confidence and trust. Let me assure you that a job well done means more work to be done. We will do a lot more I think Akwa Ibom State. The development of Akwa Ibom is in PDP’s trust.
“The peace of Akwa Ibom is in PDP’s trust. The unity of Akwa Ibom is in PDP’s trust. The youths empowerment of Akwa Ibom is in PDP’s trust, women empowerment is in PDP’s trust.
“Once more, on behalf of PDP, we reaffirm, we restate, and we reassure that PDP shall March Akwa Ibom State forward. With PDP, Akwa Ibom shall grow from strength to strength.
“With PDP, Akwa Ibom shall enjoy more peace and progress. God is resident in this party. This is the party God has spoken right for, especially in Akwa Ibom”.
Most of the delegates who spoke at the convention expressed optimism that after what they unanimously described as a phenomenal first term in office, Governor Emmanuel would be given another chance by Akwa Ibom people to consolidate on the industrialization agenda he has laid down for accelerated growth.
