Kufre ETUK —
Akwa Ibom State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mrs. Obiajulu Obiagele has described Petroleum Tanker Drivers as saboteurs and real enemies of Akwa Ibom people.
She tagged the allegation that NSCDC’s retention of a tanker driver has caused the current hike in fuel price as a blatant lie, adding that the agency was only carrying out its statutory duties as empowered by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Speaking with Nigerian Pulse on phone, Wednesday, the commandant said if the tanker driver did not go against the law, the agency would not have arrested him.
According to Obiageli, ” We arrested a truck and the tanker drivers came as a pressure group because they love economic sabotage.
”The product was loaded in Port Harcourt and the destination in the paper showed Kaduna but the tanker driver was taking the product to Calabar.
”When we started questioning, we discovered that the name in the paper was different from the person conveying the product. We then demanded for a legal paper authorizing them to deal with petroleum product, they refused to bring it and before we knew the union waded in.
” Our action is for the good of the public. If they get good products from genuine sources, people would not die of kerosene explosion.
”Because they are selfish that is why they try to cripple Civil Defence from working and I don’t know their problem with the state government.
”We are protecting the masses, the public should disregard Petroleum Tanker Drivers who claim NSCDC is the cause of hike in fuel price,”she said.
The State Commandant accused tanker drivers of bringing adultrated products into the state which have killed many innocent persons.
Mrs. Obiageli said because of the NSCDC uncompromising stance in stopping substandard petroleum products into the state, petroleum tanker drivers have found it uncomfortable to operate.
”They said they were on strike yet they are bringing in petroleu products into the state at night,” she revealed.
Meanwhile, effort to speak with the chairman, Akwa Ibom State chapter of Petroleum Tanker Drivers, Mr. Uwem was impossible as his phone line was switch off.
