... Begs governor to commence investigation into SSG’s nefarious political activities

President General of the Uda Community Youth Development Association, Ulap Victor Inwang, has brought to the notice of Governor Udom Emmanuel issues tearing down the unity of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Mbo local government area of Akwa Ibom State, calling on the governor to intervene.

Inwang, in a letter addressed to Governor Udom Emmanuel dated 17th September, 2018, had accused the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Emmanuel Ekuwem, of indulging in what could be described as nefarious activities which, according to him, are manifesting in the form anti-PDP roles, highhandedness and arbitrariness.

In the letter titled “Save Mbo PDP from Anti-party Activities and Arbitrariness of Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem” which was made available to Propeller Newspapers on Tuesday, Ulap Inwang asked Governor Emmanuel to commence investigation into the political activities of Ekuwem in Mbo, the development he said appeared to be giving the SSG’s former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), a window to further co-opt members of the PDP to the opposition in the state.

According to Inwang, Ekuwem did not support the governor’s election and the PDP in 2015, even as he expressed worry that one year after the business man turned politician got appointed as SSG, he his yet to formally defect to the  PDP in his ward, chapter, and Oro nation just as others including a former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly from Mbo, Mrs. Alice Ekpenyong, did openly.

The letter reads in part, “He supported the Labour Party and campaigned for Ann Eyo, who was the candidate of the party for the state constituency election that year. In 2015, he supported the APC in all the elections.

“Ekuwem still patronises the APC. These are my reasons for saying so. Recently, his cousin, Mr. Alex Nyong, a former chairman of Mbo and one time aspirant for Oro federal constituency who is now in the APC indicated interest to re-join the PDP, Dr. Ekuwem, discouraged him from defecting to our party, telling Nyong that anything can happen in the state in 2019 since the APC is at the helm of government at the centre.

“Because of his bias for the APC, Dr. Ekuwem, up to this moment, has made any useful effort to bring his supporters in the APC over to the PDP. These are pointers to that he does not want to deplete the ranks of the opposition in Mbo.

“Dr. Ekuwem has not shown any personal commitment in mobilising the people of Mbo for the PDP ahead of the 2019 election. For instance, since his appointment as SSG, Dr. Ekuwem has not convened a meeting in his community to discuss about your re-election, which should be top priority for any partyman committed to ensuring that his party wins the next elections

“Sadly, Dr. Ekuwem, has taken to highhandedness, arbitrariness and intimidation of members of the party and his community. The SSG has attempted arbitrarily to distort the zoning arrangement for the Mbo state constituency seat.

“In a bid to have his way with disrupting the zoning arrangement, Dr. Ekuwem, has shove known stakeholders of our party and arbitrarily chose new ‘stakeholders’ whom he wanted to muster their support to sell his scheme.

“Bypassing the real stakeholders of the party has aroused serious indignation amongst members of the party in Mbo. May His Excellency note that Dr. Ekuwem has started paying people to intimidate and harass our party men who are aversed to his proposal on zoning”.

Inwang also accused the SSG of sponsoring his removal as President General of Uda Community Youth Development Association for insisting that the two term arrangement designed for a representative of the area in the legislature in which Uda community benefited through Mrs Ekpenyong be continued.

He said further, “Last month (August), he ordered the suspension of payment of stipends to the 60 youth of Mbo who are under the Dakaada scheme, the youth council and youth caucus.

“When stakeholders approached Dr. Ekuwem, and told him that it was not the best of times to call for suspension of their stipend, he insisted that he wants to re-screen them and bring in his own men.

“Granted that those youth were nominated by other people before Dr. Ekuwem ‘joined’ the party, fact is, these young men and women are loyal members of our party. God forbids the SSG provokes them to leave our dear party in this critical time”.

Efforts to reach Mr Ekuwem to respond to Inwang’s allegations were unsuccessful at press time. Calls put through to his know mobile phone line by our correspondent on Wednesday did not scale through, as the line remained busy for most part of the day.

Propeller Newspapers reported in late August that Mr Ekuwem escaped being killed by youths from Mbo local government area during a political gathering of stakeholders and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) he convened in Uyo.

Ekuwem had, those who attended the said, moved to abolish the zoning arrangement for Mbo house of assembly seat ahead of the 2019 general elections so as to create way for his alleged plan to impose a candidates of his choice for the election.

But over 200 youths stormed the venue of the meeting at Eemjm Hotel and Suites in the city centre, and scattered chairs earlier set for the meeting, while some of them were heard saying that the SSG’s plan would not be allowed to happen.

In the ensuing melee, Ekuwem could not leave the hotel for almost an hour after the youth took over the hotel until a combined team of policemen from different units arrive and escort the SSG through an emergency exit from the venue.
