Club wins PIFO football tournament in Ikot Abasi with N500,000 cash prize


Team players of Ambassadors FC smiled home on Sunday with a cheque of N500,000 after they emerged winners of the maiden edition of the Prince Inyang Inyang Foundation (PIFO) Challenge Cup competition, following their 1-0 victory over Ikot Abasi City FC who were rewarded with N300,000 as second prize.

The Ambassadors FC team secured their victory through a goal which came midway into the first half in the final decided at ALSCON mini stadium, Ikot Abasi local government area.

Earlier during the third place game of the competition, Ibekwe United FC got the bronze with a cash prize of N200,000 after a 2-0 win against Team Work FC.

Other prizes went to the best behaved team, best goalkeeper, highest goal scorer and the most valuable player of the tournament.

Speaking at the occasion, the sponsor, Mr. Inyang Inyang, commended the various teams for the cooperation and peaceful conducts during the fiesta.

Inyang, a Nigerian businessman based in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in the USA, said the competition was part of his foundation’s commitment to locate and harness talents from across the state for future development in soccer.

Also, the Chairman of the organising committee for the competition, Mr. Linus Ndah, said PIFO sees football as a unifying factor among people, adding that it was the reason the foundation organised the competition as its own way of giving back to the society.

Mr. Ndah said eight teams from various communities of Ikot Abasi local government area had registered for the tournament which kicked off on February 18.

The Prince Inyang Inyang Foundation pushes its humanitarian gestures towards the underdogs of the society, in areas such as educational support grants, empowerment for business ventures, and skills acquisition training/start ups.

The foundation had, in the past, offered many students of Ikot Abasi origin scholarships worth millions of naira under the yearly Inyang Education Endowment Scholarship Scheme.

PIFO first sponsored a friendly football tournament in 2014 where nine teams, drawn from each clan of Ikot Abasi and Mkpat Enin local government areas, participated and won cash prizes.

It again organized a second edition of the competition in 2016 with participating teams drawn from Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Easten Obolo, the three local government areas making up Ikot Abasi federal constituency.
