* Akwa Ibom works commissioner, Ephraim Inyang-Eyen (M) cuts the tape to signify the formal handing over of Akpanusoh’s empowerment items to beneficiaries
Member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and Chairman of the assembly committee on appropriation and finance, Usoro Akpanusoh, surprised his constituents yesterday as he gave out 23 mini buses, 11 saloon cars, 38 motorcycles, 10 tricycles and several other economic empowerment items.
This came during the thanksgiving service, 47th birthday celebration and third constituency briefing/empowerment programme organized by Mr. Akpanusoh in Uquo, Esit Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State.
Among other items distributed by the lawmaker, who is serving his first term in the Assembly, are 19 power generator sets attached with hair dressing materials, 26 fashion designing machines, 20 hair clippers attached with generators, 10 deep freezers, one laptop, two big power generators, one grinding machine, five welding machines and five vulcanizing machines.
Propeller Newspaper gathered from lawmaker’s event programme that N300,000 cash donation was made as empowerment for some clergymen in the area, while one person got 20 bags of cement had requested.
Still counting in that order, 19 students got N40,000 each as education support fund, another set of 19 beneficiaries collected N20,000 each as business support funds, while N20,000 each was given out to 17 beneficiaries, all recorded in the Esit Eket and Ibeno youth Council /Caucus list.
The lawmaker in the same way gave 50 Esit Eket women N20,000 each as business support funds, N20,000 each to 50 Ibeno women, N500,000 to 53 beneficiaries in the forum of village youth presidents of Esit Eket, and N400,000 to 33 beneficiaries in forum of village youth presidents in Ibeno.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Akpanusoh said his economic empowerment programme for the Esit Eket and Ibeno people was his own way of showing appreciation and giving back to those who elected him to serve in the legislature.
“I have never wavered and will never do so in my avowed commitment to regularly bring back the reports of the errand you sent me to carry out in the state legislature”, Akpanusoh said, even as he noted that he would make the programmes a continuous exercise in the constituency.
He, among other things, appealed to the state government to facilitate reticulation of 33KVA dedicated transmission lines from the Eket junction substation to Esit Eket local government area so as to address cases of power outages suffered in his constituency.
While calling on his colleagues to ensure that all hands are on deck for the speedy passage of the Akwa Ibom State Oil Producing Communities Commission Bill currently before the House, as is obtained in other oil producing states, the lawmaker urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to intensify their interests in having International Oil Companies (OICs) relocate their headquarters to the states of their major operations.
Speaker of the Akwa Ibom Assembly, Onofiok Luke, who led other lawmakers to the occasion, expressed gratitude to the Esit Eket and Ibeno people for having elected Akpanusoh into the legislature.
Luke said, “Anytime the budget comes and we take it, it goes to his (Akpanusoh’s) committee. He is a very diligent man and one who knows what to do at anytime. And that is why we have been passing the (state’s) budget on time, and there has never been any quarrel between the executive and the legislature on the issue of budget because he is a diligent fellow”.
The Speaker called on the Esit Eket and Ibeno people to support Akpanusoh’s re-election bid, as, according to him, Governor Udom Emmanuel also favours the lawmaker’s return to the House in 2019.
On his part, the state chairman of the PDP, Paul Ekpo, apparently referring to the campaign for the 2019 polls, said the workload of the party has been reduced following performances of lawmakers across the state constituencies.
“For us as a party, when we see the attitudes exhibited by our superlative representatives in various house, starting from the Senate to the House of Representatives and to the state assembly, it gladdens our hearts because they’re helping to make the work of the party easy”, Ekpo said.
Representative of the governor and state commissioner for works, Mr Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, performed the formal handing over of the empowerment items to beneficiaries.
